The quests themselves show a stubborn lack of originality: kill x number of monsters, fetch y number of some object, rescue z number of prisoners. The main story quests are voiced by earnest and American sounding actors, but sidequests are not and the quests themselves are grindy, a mixture of short instanced quests in mini-dungeons and environmental sub-bosses that are completed solo or by small ad hoc groups of players. After the well-produced cutscene-heavy tutorial chapter and in the game world proper, the player is quickly inundated by quests in service of one faction or another, leading them through the five major areas and dozens of locations. The anime-inspired story puts the player in the role of a mystical martial artist in training, whose school and revered master were destroyed by an evil sorceress, thus setting up the arc of revenge and retribution. As MMOs go, Blade & Soul ultimately feels like a lightweight experience.Īctually, Blade and Soul - like so many recent MMOs - consists of an essentially single player campaign that prepares the player for PvP arenas at level 45. An enjoyable and skill-heavy combat system is unfortunately wedded to an uninspired and ultimately repetitive campaign. Otherwise it felt like being stranded in the mall in Japan.Launched in Asia in 2012, NCSoft’s MMORPG Blade & Soul has been released in the West and while it’s a polished and attractive game that makes a good initial impression, a more extended stay in its anime and martial arts-inspired world reveals some issues that impact its staying power. I don't know, maybe I'm dumb, but I didn't understand half of the icons until someone told me what they meant. What I didn't like about BDO is that developers REALLY like to use the icon system for everything and there are different icons every time and the player is just expected to understand what they mean. The game won't lead you by the hand and show you its best parts, it will just throw you in the middle of the unknown possibilities and it's up to you to find things that are interesting to you. It's the sandbox MMO where you build your own adventure, but you have to know stuff in order to do it. But you still can if you want to.īDO is different. You just indulge the awesome fights and the story without too much concern about farming the gold, exp, and the best gear. It doesn't force you into the standard Korean MMO grindfest. What I like about BnS is that it's not typical Korean MMO, it's more like an adventure that you can take with your friends. I played both and I kind of like both, although my experience in BDO is extremely limited. I think BDO and Blade and Soul are uncomparable. Blade and Soul is closer to Tera than it is Black Desert though. Here's the thing though, you can play both right now if you are really curious, though if you don't understand Korean (or other language it's available in) the story and some aspects will be lost on you, and you can make you own mind up. ![]() Though the classes are locked to gender and race, which some people hate, but they have similar classes of the opposite sex and are adding more often. Of course it has less content, and not as "polished", it's newer, three years newer.īDO's character creator blows this out of the water, not even a fair fight. ![]() BDO just came out overseas, and they are committed to getting it out here too. How slowly, we don't know yet, but it's annoying having to wait three years to even get the game announced, and then wonder what they really need to "beta test" besides translations. Asking in a specific reddit for a game which people prefer, stupid, as you'll get the answer you expect, one favoring the game the reddit is about.Īn honest answer? Blade and Soul has been out three years overseas, and we aren't getting all the content, they are phasing it in slowly.
